Planetarium Special Feature: Sordid Secrets of the Stars is September 18th at 6pm and 7pm at the Emerald Coast Science Center on Memorial Parkway in Fort Walton Beach. Discover the sizzling stories behind the constellations in this planetarium event for adults (21+). The Planetarium is an inflatable dome, sponsored by FPL. Guests sit on cushions on the floor of the planetarium to view the show. Due to size, space is limited to 25 patrons at a time. Purchase tickets in advance by calling 850-664-1261, stop by the Science Center, or use our online ticketing option to purchase your tickets. $15 Nonmembers, $13 members and includes access to one showing, plus a drink ticket. The Market Shops – the 8th Annual Bloody Mary Festival is Saturday, October 14 from 11am – 2pm to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Walton County.  Restaurants and bars will be competing for their take on the best Bloody Mary in South Walton with vodka provided by Distillery 98, beer by Idyll Hounds, bubbly bar, a DJ, live music, SEC football streaming, a cigar bar, food and shopping by The Market Shops merchants and more! Sip & Science: Mystery at the Museum is October 21st from 6pm-9pm at the Emerald Coast Science Center on Memorial Parkway in Fort Walton Beach. Bring your friends, grab a drink, and crack the case. Get clued-in to a night of sipping and sleuthing! See if you can crack the case by solving our murder mystery at your own pace, solo or in teams. We’ll also have all our regular museum exhibits up and running including mystery-themed trivia on the sciPad. You’ll get to explore the field of forensic science, play with fun technology, and compete for some awesome prizes while you figure out whodunit.

Buy tickets online now and save with our Early Bird pricing! $20 for Science Center members and $25 for nonmembers. Tickets purchased day-of will be $25 for Science Center members and $30 for nonmembers. Ticket price includes admission, access to regular and special museum exhibits, drink tickets for adult beverages (beer and a specialty cocktail), and food. The Dewey “Buck” Destin Park will serve as the site for a community yard sale on Saturday, October 21 from 8 a.m.-noon. Those interested in selling any belongings can sign up ($15 for Destin residents, free for members of Destin Seniors, and $20 for non-Destin residents). This fee includes one table and two chairs on a section of the parking lot. Set-up will begin at 7 a.m.
There is a limit of one city table per reservation, but participants are welcome to bring an additional table from home. To reserve a spot or for more information, please call the Community Center at 850-654-5184.

The Navy Band Commodores feature 19 top jazz and “big band” musicians offering a mixture of styles ranging from authentic sounds of the swing era to contemporary high energy music. Dizzy Gillespie, Grover Washington Jr., Louis Bellson, and Pete Christlieb are a few of the guest artists who have appeared with the ensemble.  The free concert will take place on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. at the Saenger Theatre. Free general admission tickets are available at the Saenger Theatre Box Office, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Tickets must be obtained in advance of the performance.

October 25

The public is invited to attend the City of Destin’s Open House on Wednesday, October 25th from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Destin Community Center. “This year’s theme is ‘Music to Our Ears’, and we’ll have a local band to add a little flair to an already great annual event,” said Tamara Young, Public Information Director. “Jones and Company will share their talent, and the event gives City departments and important partners a chance to engage with the community on what we do.”
Nonprofit organizations interested in having an informational table at the event should call City Hall for specifics. Lunch will be provided by Chef Jim Shirah.
The City will also host a free Community Shred Day as part of the Open House. Residents and businesses can bring old documents to be securely shredded on site from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Community Center or from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Destin City Hall. To allow for maximum public participation within the timeframe, only reasonable amounts of materials will be accepted. Parking fees at the Community Center will be waived during the event.

Spooky Secrets of the Stars, a Planetarium Special Feature is October 26th at the Emerald Coast Science Center.

Come dressed in Halloween costumes, get your Trick-or-Treat candy, and prepare to be scared! We’re ready to celebrate Halloween under the night sky in our inflatable planetarium. Join us for a fun and scary night of monster stories, inspired by our planets, moons, and stars. There will be stories of familiar monsters (werewolves, vampires, and minotaurs), unfamiliar monsters (Karakondzula, Chimera, and Coatlicue), and the heroes who battled them. In a battle between good and evil, who will win? 

The 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. show are family-friendly stories about the creepy creatures of mythology hidden in the night sky. These showings are appropriate for ages 5-6 and up. The 7 p.m. Spooktacular Show is more appropriate for ages 8 and up as the tales told during this show are spookier.

The Friends of the Walton County Library’s annual book sale returns. This year’s sale will feature the largest selection of books to date, including vintage books and records. The event is set to take place on October 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Coastal Branch Library located at 437 Greenway Trail, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Attendees will find an expansive collection of books across a myriad of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, children’s literature, art, and coffee table books.

It’s Military Appreciation Day at the Emerald Coast Science Center on November 11th from 10am-3pm. All active duty members, veterans, and their families receive free admission to the museum today with valid military ID. Select from several of our designs, including holiday prints and punny science slogans. Check in begins at 5:45 p.m. so you can select your designs and grab your drinks before settling in at 6 p.m. to learn how to screen print!

Receiving critical acclaim and awards for his performances in Kiss Me, Kate, Man of La Mancha, and Ragtime, Stokes has collaborated with renowned conductors like John Williams and Gustavo Dudamel performing at Carnegie Hall and the White House.
